Get Reality

A former colleague’s wife recently started a blog that thanks to my friend’s penchance for promotion, has literally taken off overnight.

The blog has been live for about a month.  But already people all over the world are talking about it.   My friend and his wife have been on television talk shows, radio shows, and have been featured in dozens of articles, both in print an online.

People are suggesting book deals.  Others are hinting at turning the blog into a reality show.

As a writer who is always hoping for that one lucky break that lets me do this full time, I looked on with awe as the blog took off.  If they can do it, I certainly can too!

But then, reality bit.

Early on in my relationship with my partner, I learned that airing even an inkling of personal information, even if for humor, is not OK.  About 6 months into the relationship, I wrote what I thought was a very funny and endearing article about my love’s quirks.

Big mistake.

My partner suggested that from then on I should submit every article I wrote for her approval.

I never wrote about her again, even though given my friend’s wife’s recent success, it could have been our lucky break.

Or could it have simply led to our demise?

Given the fate of couples on reality shows, is the 15 minutes of fame really worth it?

I've been in a writer long enough to know that change is not only inevitable, it's what keeps us going. Don't fight it, don't fear it. Embrace it and have fun.
